FAQ
The Proctosedyl FAQ page provides detailed information about the product, its uses, and precautions.
What is Proctosedyl and what is it used for?
Proctosedyl is a local medicine used for symptomatic treatment of hemorrhoids, as well as their pre- and postoperative treatment, proctitis and anal eczema.
What ingredients does Proctosedyl contain?
Proctosedyl contains a substance that reduces inflammation (prednisolone) and a local anesthetic (cinchocaine) that relieves pain. The other ingredients in Proctosedyl ointment are Octyldodecanol, refined castor oil, hydrogenated castor oil, macrogol-400 monoricinoleate and Chypre perfume oil.
Storing Proctosedyl
Do not store Proctosedyl ointment above 25°C.
What is in Proctosedyl ointment?
Proctosedyl ointment is a colourless to slightly yellowish ointment supplied in a 30g tube with a separate applicator.
How long does it take to work?
Symptoms usually improve quickly thanks to the dual-action formula containing both a local anesthetic and a corticosteroid to relieve pain and provide an anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effect.
Where can I buy Proctosedyl treatments?
Proctosedyl is an over-the-counter treatment that can be easily obtained from your local pharmacist so that you can tackle your problem with the utmost discretion.
How long should I use Proctosedyl?
It is used for a short period of time, usually 5 to 7 days. It should not be used for more than one to two weeks. If symptoms persist for more than two weeks, you should consult a doctor.
What should you know before using Proctosedyl?
Do not use Proctosedyl if you are allergic to prednisolone, cinchoacaine, other local anesthetics, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
What can happen if I have used Proctosedyl for a long time?
Long-term uninterrupted treatment should be avoided as this increases the risk of side effects. Long-term treatment may also cause the skin in the affected area to thin and deteriorate and some of the drug may be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Can Proctosedyl reduce the effectiveness of latex products such as condoms?
If latex products such as condoms are used at the same time as Proctosedyl in the treatment area, their components may damage the latex products.
Can I use Proctosedyl if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, are planning to have a baby or are breast-feeding, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Proctosedyl. Proctosedyl should be avoided especially during the first three months of pregnancy. Talk to your doctor before using this medicine. The clinical indication for treatment with Proctosedyl in pregnant and breast-feeding women should be carefully determined and the benefits weighed against the risks. Long-term use should in particular be avoided.
How to use Proctosedyl ointment?
The ointment can be applied around the anus and/or inside the anus using the specific applicator provided in the package. In general, the ointment should be applied twice a day, morning and evening, but on the first day it can be applied three times for quick relief.
What happens if you use more Proctosedyl than you should?
If you use too much Proctosedyl or accidentally swallow it is unlikely to be dangerous; if you are worried, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
What if you forget to use Proctosedyl?
Do not use a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. When you remember, use the next prescribed dose and continue with the treatment.
